A large police operation in place to prevent anti-social behaviour before, during and after the football match between Weymouth and Yeovil yesterday (Monday 18th April) has proved successful.

Dorset officers worked with British Transport Police and Weymouth FC to prepare for the game.

Section 35 dispersal powers were in place, which would allow officers to address any issues by breaking up groups of people.

There were reports of around 100 supporters gathering at a local pub before the match, but officers attending found no trouble and helped the fans to get to the Bob Lucas Stadium without incident.

Fans have been thanked by police for 'enjoying the game in the right spirit'

During the game, one home supporter was arrested, in relation to a report of a bottle being thrown onto the pitch.

The match itself finished goalless.

Afterwards, the Weymouth fans were asked to stay behind in the stadium while the away crowd left.

Some green smoke was set off in the car park, but police on site managed to get the fans away safely.

Chief Superintendent Richard Bell, Local Policing Commander and Silver Commander for the event, said:

“Local officers were supported by specialist public order officers and police dogs to ensure a visible presence in the town before and after the game, as well as at the match itself.

“We would like to thank the vast majority of fans who attended the game and enjoyed it in the right spirit and co-operated with the directions of officers and club officials throughout. Particularly, we would like to thank Weymouth supporters for their patience after the game as they were asked to remain in the ground.

“We are also grateful for the support of Weymouth FC and British Transport Police.”
