Queues for Weymouth chippy despite rising prices

The war in Ukraine is driving up the prices of cooking oil, fish and potatoes

A Weymouth Chippy says customers don't seem to be dissuaded by the rising price of a packet of chips.

But, chip shops across the UK are asking Norway for more fish to help combat surging costs.

Rising energy bills and increasing prices of cooking oil due to the war in Ukraine are pushing up what we're paying for a meal.

Paul Hay owns Fish n Fritz in Weymouth. He said:

"It's not that everything stems from Ukraine, but if demand gets less in one country, or if we can't get hold of a product in one country, supply and demand goes up in another area. It's going up globally.

"Fish and the potato which seems very, very basic is high in demand globally. So because it's high in demand globally we're having to pay top price for it.

"We are still fortunate we can still get over these products, but we have to pass that on to the customer, unfortunately."

Paul says costs on lots of the products he uses have gone up by between 30-40%, and he's had to put his prices up accordingly. He deals with sustainable suppliers and says he's managed to get those rising costs to stabilise for his business.

But that hasn't stopped people stopping by for a cod and chips. He said:

"Being in the position where we are by the seaside, especially a beautiful place like Weymouth, people come from all over to come to the seaside and to stay here whether it's just for a day trip, or a few days, or possibly a week.

"Once they come here they know they've got to get fed and they've already made the proviso for allowing for fish and chips. People are still queuing up every day of the week."
