Weymouth Town Council is inviting sports organisations to be part of Weymouth’s annual Beach Sports and Community Festival and is offering grants to help local clubs run activities for younger residents.

2022 marks a decade since Weymouth hosted the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events. To celebrate this occasion, Weymouth Town Council will be working with local sports clubs to run a multi-sports event on Sunday 24th July. This will round off our annual Beach Sports and Community Festival which runs from 12th to 24th July on Weymouth beach.

The town council are inviting clubs to register their interest now because there is a lot of planning involved in putting on a festival of this size. They're hoping clubs will come forward who want to deliver a range of fun, beginner-friendly activities on the beach which are related to their sport, and that young people can take part in.

Weymouth Town Council wants to see more young people getting involved in beach sports

As a thank you and to support young budding sports stars of the future, each club delivering an activity as part of the Sunday event will have the opportunity to apply for a sports grant of up to £250 to be specifically targeted at the club’s youth and diversity activities.

This event ties in with the national #PassTheBaton campaign, which highlights the successes of Team GB and ParalympicGB and the opportunities that came from London 2012.

Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Colin Huckle said:

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to host this inclusive multi-sports event which will celebrate the legacy of Weymouth hosting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sailing events and help to pass the baton on to the younger generation.

“The town council will be working with local sports clubs to put on a range of free activities to help promote their clubs and to inspire people to get involved. This will be a fantastic event and I urge as many local sports clubs as possible to get in touch and be part of this.”

The event aims to raise awareness and participation in beach sports
