West Dorset's MP says he's 'delighted' that his push to see the UK banning live animal exports is progressing through the House of Commons.

Chris Loder has been campaigning for a change in the law since first being elected in 2019.

He wants to see legislation to 'put an end to the export of live animals for slaughter and fattening from Great Britain, ending unnecessary stress, exhaustion, and injury on long journeys, including the export of live sheep and cows'.

The Animal Welfare (Livestock Exports) Bill has now passed through all stages of the House of Commons.

In 2020, Mr Loder urged fellow Members to ensure the practice was banned. He said:

“I’ve long campaigned for the Animal Welfare (Live Exports) Bill to be introduced, and I will not stop until this Bill has passed successfully through the House of Lords to make sure this practice is outlawed.”

The West Dorset MP also campaigned for a further change in the law, which increased the maximum sentence for cruelty to animals from 6 months to 5 years.
