West Dorset MP Chris Loder is welcoming a government consultation on fairer and clearer food labelling.

It's been launched been by the Environment Secretary

Mr Loder's been campaigning to make sure shoppers know exactly where their food is coming from.

The Dorset MP also wants to see food miles put on packaging.

Mr Loder said: “This consultation is the latest stage in my quest to ensure shoppers know exactly where their food is coming from. It also serves to recognise the contribution our excellent British farmers make with their produce.”

He continued: “Proposals outlined include increased visibility of origin labelling and mandatory origin labelling for minimally processed meat products. In 2021, I tabled an amendment to address this very issue, along with my proposal to introduce food miles on packaging. I’d still like to see this on labelling, as well as transparency about products of non-stun slaughter.”

Environment Secretary, Steve Barclay, said: “The Government backs British farmers, who work hard to produce food to world-leading standards and maintain our nation’s food security. British consumers want to buy their produce, but too often products made to lower standards abroad aren’t clearly labelled to tell them apart.”
