Weymouth's Town Bridge is set to undergo repainting following this summer - twelve years after it was last done.

Dorset Council engineers have carried out an inspection, checking things like the parapets and paint work.

They were last painted in 2012 and are now said to the 'showing signs of localised corrosion'.

The authority say they're going to do the repainting after summer holidays.

In a post on social media, Dorset Council have said:

"We will keep disruption to a minimum, but may need to close a lane of the bridge to vehicles while the work takes place.

"We will consult with our conservation team whilst planning and undertaking our maintenance work."

Comments on the announcement have been met with criticism, as works were carried out on the deck of the bridge in April and September 2023.

The Council's said this latest work wouldn't have been carried out at the same time:

"When doing the previous deck repair work, a footway remained open so pedestrians could still get across the bridge. If both sets of work took place at the same time, we would have needed to close the footway, meaning no pedestrian access.

"By working on one side of the bridge parapets at a time, we will be able to keep a single lane open for vehicles and a footway for pedestrians."
