A family-owned cinema in Annan is urging customers to be respectful after rubbish was left strewn across aisles and smeared on seats after a screening.

Staff from Lonsdale Cinema were forced to clean up litter left behind in the auditorium after one of their screenings.

Bakery items, sweet wrappers and drinks were left strewn on the aisle and some even smeared on the seats.

Owner Alan Towers said his staff work hard to keep the premises clean and comfortable for local community:

"We do take pride in the cinema. We like to think we are very welcoming to people that come in and find it a nice tidy cinema."

The mess left behind was found to be items purchased from outside the business.

Towers says they rely on the sales of food and drinks as they don't earn much on ticket sales:

"None of it was actually bought in the cinema, it all brought in from outside. We don't get an awful lot of money from admission tickets so the concession sales, the kiosk sales, are important for us to keep the cinema operating."

It was pointed out how distressing it can be when they're forced to clean up after viewers, especially when there isn't much time in between shows.

The team were left rushing to clear up the aisles and seats in time for the next screening so that the next lot of customers were entering a clean and pleasant environment.

"It is of course very disappointing that at the end of the film there's so much mess left so to find that the row was scattered with rubbish - not only the row on the floor but also the seats, there were bakery items that had been squashed onto the seats - was indeed very disappointing."
