An eco-cyclist who has toured the world was left appalled by the amount of litter on a main Dumfriesshire road, calling it the worst in Scotland.

Martin Hutchinson, who has educated people across the world on the environmental factors, travelled along the B7076 near Lockerbie, noticing overflowing bins and dozens of urine-filled bottles.

He said: "Looking to the left of me it was constant, I couldn't turn the pedals without seeing rubbish.

"Then I noticed all the bottles of pee, it went all the way along for 16 miles to Lockerbie.

"It's not new, a lot of it has been sitting there for a long time - you can see how it's decaying."

He added: "That has to be the worst I've seen in Scotland."

The cyclist is currently touring the UK with his dog Starsky highlighting positive methods to improve the environment, having previous travelled 36,000km through a number of countries.

His experience on the Dumfriesshire road let him to contact the council to discuss the issue.

He said: "I came out and felt, well that's fallen on deaf ears.

"They're just not interested, they probably don't see it as one of their major problems because it's not actually in Lockerbie it's all along the road, but it is a problem."

Dumfries and Galloway enjoy litter picking achievement

Last week Dumfries and Galloway Council celebrated a successful month of litter picks, with the area being awarded 'Best Overall Campaign' during Scotland's annual 'Spring Clean'.

Volunteers helped collect nearly 2,000 bags of rubbish between 17th March and 17th April.

A record 240 organised litter picks were completed in that time, but that won't solve the rubbish problem according to Mr Hutchinson.

He said: "The public can only do so much, when we put it on the council to do something they don't do anything.

"It's been accepted that there's always rubbish, that's the attitude we get."

Council working with community

A statement from the council said: "Dumfries and Galloway Council is proactively engaging with communities across our region to collect litter.

"Part of this work has taken place through 240 litter picking events during the Spring Clean Scotland campaign that ran from 17 March to 17 April.

"The impact of lifting a significant number of bags over the 4-week campaign has had a great impact on the nature, environment, and look of our region.

"Council services will continue to work together with individuals and community groups to remove litter while ensuring information and education is provided to prevent littering."

Members of the public are encouraged to report any littering or fly tipping through the council website.
