After a successful debut 'Hydro X Prix' in Dumfries & Galloway, organisers of sustainable motorsport series ‘Extreme-E’ say they’re hopefully the event will return to the region next year.

Taking place at the former Glenmuckloch opencast coal mine near Sanquhar, the spectacle saw teams from across the globe all fighting to take top spot in a series of races in electric vehicles.

But, it hasn't just been about the sporting action. Extreme-E say they are dedicated to sustainable practises, and look to make a lasting legacy in each host location.

In Scotland, a multi-stage project centred around the restoration of the River Nith got underway, to ensure the preservation of Atlantic salmon.

Run in partnership with the Nith District Salmon Fishery Board, efforts were made to promote the reversal of climate change, through community engagement and education.

According to a recent YouGov Sport study, it's understood the Scottish Hydro X Prix has generated an estimated economic boost of £31.06m.

Extreme-E managing director Ali Russell says it’s great to be able to support local areas through direct investment, and the involvement of various local businesses.

He says: “The YouGov Sport Report Economic Impact Study for the Hydro X Prix illustrates the positive financial impact an Extreme E race has had on Scotland, particularly to the local economy, which is very satisfying.

“We are hugely proud that the Hydro X Prix achieved such impactful economic results, and delivered so many wider benefits to the country as a whole.

“Holding an international motorsport event in Scotland, while raising awareness of the country and Extreme E’s shared commitments to sustainability, renewable energy initiatives and e-mobility, was an ambitious project, but one in which we were able to deliver successfully.”

Discussions are currently taking place about the possibility of the competition returning to Dumfries & Galloway.
