Work to transform the former George Hotel in Stranraer into a vibrant community hub is getting underway.

After years of planning and consulting with locals, it's hoped the derelict but historical building can be restored to its former glory.

It's hoped the effort will help regenerate Stranraer as a destination, and draw in more visitors with the offer of bunkhouse accommodation, as well as the planned community arts space and climbing centre.

Contractors Clark Contracts say they're ready to get going on the new vision for the building, with major works set to begin on Monday the 13th of November.

The building is currently in a sorry state

Local Councillors and representatives from Clark Contracts gathered at the hotel this morning to celebrate the journey so far, and talk through some of the redevelopment plans.

The project is supported by the UK Government's Levelling up funding and the local council, with the aim of feeding into a wider scale town regeneration.

With years of planning leading up to this point, planners have remained eager to keep some original elements of the building.

Preserving character is key

Speaking on aims to retain the traditional George Hotel frontage, Councillor David Inglis says:

"We need to look after these buildings, a lot of people just wanted to bulldoze it and start from scratch, which may have been easier.

"I think it's important we keep the character of the town.

"The front elevation and part of the side elevation is going to be kept, so the George Hotel looks like the George Hotel."

"It's going to be a benefit to the town centre, it's going to bring tourism in.

"It's important the town regeneration attracts footfall into the town for the businesses. I think this is going to do that."
