A man who sexually assaulted a woman after following her off a bus in Nottingham has been jailed.

Ervin Shehu, 36, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to a charge of sexual assault at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday (February 22nd).

Shehu was found to have assaulted the woman in the early hours of August 25th, 2019 in Nottingham city centre.

During the trial, the court heard how Shehu had tried to talk to his victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, making her uncomfortable.

To get away from him, she got on the bus home back to her house after finishing her shift at work. Unbeknownst to her, Shehu also got on the bus and when she get off, so did he.

Ervin Shehu, 36, sexually assaulted the woman in August 2019.

Whilst on her way home, Shehu grabbed the woman from behind and began to touch her inappropriately, covering her mouth as she screamed for help.

The victim's partner, who was on the phone to her before the attack took place, heard screaming before the call was disconnected.

Her partner was able to locate her and challenged Shehu, who still was on top of the victim. After her partner arrived, Shehu then fled the scene.

At Nottingham Crown Court, Shehu was handed a sentence of five years in prison, meaning Shehu will not be released until 2027, aged 41.

Speaking about the case, Detective Constable Richard Robertson from Nottinghamshire Police praised the victim's bravery.

"This incident must have been absolutely terrifying for the victim and it has had a devastating impact on her," he said.

“I’d like to commend her for her bravery shown throughout our investigation and I hope that now Shehu is behind bars for a significant amount of time gives her some degree of closure and comfort.

“I also hope the successful outcome of this investigation will give other victims the confidence to come forward and report serious sexual offences.

“I’d like to reassure people that Nottinghamshire Police will always listen to and support victims and do everything in its power to ensure dangerous individuals like Shehu are caught and brought to justice.”
