Humberside Police has made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, following a road crash on the A63 in which 3 people died.

The main road in and out of Hull was closed for hours, while emergency services responded to the incident on Monday night near Melton.

A white BMW 1 Series collided with a grey Peugeot 3008 before coming to a stop and setting alight, around 10pm on the Westbound carriageway.

Officers have now confirmed one of the vehicles was involved in an "incident with a Police vehicle" prior to the collision, and as such, the case has been referred to the independent watchdog.

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: "Our Professional Standards department carry out a review of any incident where there has been multiple fatalities or serious injury, to ascertain whether our actions may have contributed directly or indirectly to the circumstances of the death or serious injury.

"In the case of the A63 fatalities on 22 November 2021, one of the vehicles was involved in an incident with a Police vehicle prior to the crash and as such, we have referred the case to the IOPC.

"Our thoughts are with the families of those who have passed away, and we have specially trained officers in place to ensure that they receive the support they need throughout the investigative process."
