Stark new figures from Public Health England show Hull now how the highest infection rate for coronavirus anywhere in the country.

Almost 2,000 cases were recorded in the seven days to November 7th- the equivalent of 726.8 cases per 100,000 people.

It represents a sharp jump from 1,134 new cases in the previous seven days (the week to October 31), or 436.5 per 100,000 people.

The figures have come with a warning to follow social distancing rules.

Public health figures have made a renewed appeal to follow the social distancing advice, which includes staying two-metres apart where possible.

Hull City Council chief executive Matt Jukes has tweeted to ask people to reduce out contacts, saying it shows how quickly the Covid-19 virus can spread.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Hull would take part in a mass coronavirus testing pilot.

Kits that can provide results in just 15 minutes are going to be rolled out across the city after a successful trial in Liverpool.
