Hull Trains restarts journeys after "hibernation" period

The operator says it has measures in place to keep passengers safe.

Hull Trains has restarted journeys, marking the end of a third period of hibernation, brought in because of the latest coronavirus lockdown.

The company has introduced a series of new measures to ensure passengers are safe while travelling, including a new app to track how many people are on board each service.

As it is an open-access operator, Hull Trains doesn't receive any Government support, relying solely on ticket sales for revenue.

Louise Cheeseman, managing director, said: "Our passenger numbers reduced to such a a point that it wasn't financially viable.

"On three separate occasions in the last twelve months we've hibernated the business because it would have been foolhardy of us to run empty trains because they are incredibly expensive."

Keeping passengers safe

The company has appointed a cleaner for every service, cleaning touch-points. A 'misting' product is also being used to kill germs on any surfaces.

A new tracker app has also been introduced, with train staff recording how many passengers are on board, in real time.

Louise Cheeseman added: "People can choose to board whichever carriage they'll be most comfortable in.

"The app will create a traffic light system, it will tell you where to position yourself on the platform to get into carriage D or carriage A.

"Our onboard ticket system is completely different from any other operators. We aren't forcing people to sit in a dedicated seat, they can choose, and we're helping them with a traffic light system."

"There's a real air of optimism and anticipation in the office.

"For me, I think this is it.

"We're on the up now."
