Newark will receive millions of pounds in Government funding to improve and revitalise its Town Centre.

£2.1mill of funding will be put into the Cultural Heart of Newark Scheme over the next three years. The money will go towards rejuvenating local shops, pubs, hospitality venues and leisure facilities to increase footfall for the area.

The number of people shopping in local high streets has dropped over the past few years following the rise of online shopping and the pandemic.

The Market Place, Riverside Park, and Newark Castle gardens are all areas which could be facing development under the Scheme.

Cllr David Lloyd, the Conservative leader of Newark Council said the Cultural Heart of Newark Scheme is ‘a three year programme of organising events and activities.

‘But crucially also working with all different sectors of that economy, (retail, pubs, hospitality, leisure) to understand how different activities and events drive the footfall.’

‘It’s about positioning the town centre for the future, for the people who want to use it and how they’re going to use it.’

Cllr Lloyd said what was important about the project was the process of ‘learning from it, what works what doesn’t, how much does it cost, and then working with all those different people going forward to sustain this in future years.’
