It was just last year that ITV delighted Mamma Mia! fans across the country with their brand new talent show, Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream. Although the show - which saw an aspiring bunch of West End hopefuls battle it out to become the next Sophie and Sky - was seemingly a hit with viewers, ITV have now confirmed it will not be returning for a second season.

Confirming the show's future to the Mirror, an ITV spokesperson admitted the talent show was only ever meant to be a "one off", explaining: "Mamma Mia I Have A Dream was commissioned to celebrate 25 years of the musical, so was only ever intended to be a one off series."

With show-winners Stevie and Tobias currently taking the West End by storm, they continued: "The show sought to find a new Sophie and Sky, who are now starring in the West End musical."

Despite this, as fans of the popular musical talent show will know, the show wasn't the first of its kind when it comes to seeking out talent for West End shows. From 2006 - 2010, similar format shows such as How Do You Solve a Problem like Maria? and Any Dream Will Do aired, finding lead roles for productions of The Sound of Music and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

So, despite the fact Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream won't be returning to our screens, fans aren't ruling out the possibility of the panel returning in order to find lead cast members for a different musical!

The news of the show's future comes just months after the first series of the show aired on ITV - with weekly episodes beginning to air from Sunday 22nd October 2023, and running to Sunday 10th December 2023.

The show was hosted by Zoe Ball - who reportedly hinted at the show's future recently, citing it "a shame" - who was joined by judges Alan Carr, singer Jessie Ware and theatre performers Amber Riley and Samantha Banks.

You can watch back episodes of Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream now on ITVX and STV Player.
