This Morning viewers tuned into today's episode (Monday 22nd May) to be greeted by Friday hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary, following Phillip Schofield's shock departure from the show over the weekend.

After ITV bosses confirmed Holly Willoughby had taken an early half-term break following the news, the show kicked off with a tribute to Phillip, who hosted the programme for over 20 years.

Alison told viewers: "We can't start today's show without paying tribute to the man who spent the last two decades sitting on the This Morning sofa, Phillip Schofield."

Dermot added: "Everyone on and off screen at ITV want to say a huge thank you to Phil for what he's done to make the show such a success over the last 21 years. We all know he's one of the best live television broadcasters this country has ever had. We wish him all the best for the future."

The pair's tribute also featured photos of Phillip from his time on the show.

Phillip released a statement on Saturday (20th May) afternoon to confirm he'd made the tough decision to step down from This Morning, due to recent rumours about his feud with co-host Holly Willoughby.

The 61-year-old wrote: 'I have always been proud to cover fascinating stories on This Morning. But recently, This Morning itself has become the story.

'Throughout my career in TV - including the very difficult last few days - I have always done my best to be honourable and kind.

'I understand that ITV has decided the current situation can't go on, and I want to do what I can to protect the show that I love.

'So I have agreed to step down from This Morning with immediate effect, in the hope that the show can move forward to a bright future.

'I'd like to thank everyone who has supported me - especially This Morning's amazing viewers - and I'll see you all for the Soap Awards next month.'

It's understood Alison and Dermot will front the show until Holly's return on Monday 5th June.

This Morning airs every weekday at 10am on ITV and STV.
