A Colchester family is holding a charity football match to raise funds for their six-year-old daughter who has severe disabilities.

Grace Beverton start having severe seizures in 2018 and was later diagnosed with a mutation of the gene RHOBTB2 (x.1448G>A) following consultation with a genetics specialist at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

She is one of only 38 people diagnosed with the condition around the world, possibly only the third in the UK.

The condition prevents the six-year-old from walking or talking, and as there are very few cases like Grace’s it is difficult to know how she will develop.

Her family and supporters have been raising funds for therapies and equipment which are not available on the NHS, to help Grace sit unaided and achieve long-term milestones such as bearing weight on her legs or even standing and walking.

There is also likely to be specialised equipment needed, as well as possible adaptations to the family home.

The annual charity football game was organised by Grace’s father Dale Beverton, a close family friend, and Colchester United legend Karl Duguid.

The team also includes stars like Greg Halford and Kem Izzet.

Dale said: “Grace and all the family are so grateful to the Colchester Legends team, especially Karl Duguid who put the team together for Grace. Karl was a hero to me when I was growing up – I feel very lucky that we have now become friends and he is always so keen to help Grace.”

Grace’s family is being supported by children’s charity Tree of Hope which helps families fundraise for children like Grace with healthcare needs and provides charity status to benefit from gift aid, corporate support while also providing donor reassurance.

Tree of Hope CEO Becky Andrew said: ‘We’re really pleased to hear that Grace’s family has so much support in their community and we hope everyone enjoys the football match. Tree of Hope are here to support however we can.”

Tickets to the match cost £5 for adults and £2 for kids and can be bought at the Stanway Rovers football ground on the day.
