Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) are issuing safety advice, after a flat fire in Chelmsford was caused by an e-bike on charge.

Crews were called to Gloucester Avenue just after 1pm yesterday lunchtime (April 9th), where they found a ground floor totally alight.

Neighbours saw sparks coming out of the front door and heard a loud bang, with all those in the flat noticing the fire early enough to get out unharmed.

They're now being supported by the Red Cross.

It's been left with extreme damage, with the second floor also suffering smoke and heat damage.

Watch Manager Andy Edwards said: "Neighbours heard a loud bang and saw sparks coming out of the front door.

"Crews found the entire ground floor of the flat on fire and did really well to get the fire under control so quickly.

"Thankfully the occupants noticed the fire quickly and were able to get out unharmed but it could have been a very different story.

"The incident highlights the importance of charging e-bikes and e-scooters safely and making sure chargers and batteries are in a good condition."
