If you're in Chelmsford this afternoon you may well see a procession of performers, bands and brightly decorated and noisy push floats.

They're all taking part in an eco-friendly carnival in the city centre which has banned motorised vehicles from taking part in efforts to be more environmentally conscious.

Tony, who's organising the event, says it was important to keep it environmentally friendly: "You've got to be more environmentally aware now and it's very important that everybody does their bit. For example, Chelmsford has been on a big green push.

"Therefore the last thing we wanted to do was have a traditional, old-school carnival where everyone was sat on trucks pumping out more diesel."

Instead of using motorised vehicles, participants have been encouraged to walk or use use non-motorised transport such as bikes, push chairs and trollies.

He says some people have resisted the idea of a non-motorised carnival: "It will take time to establish the event. There are still some people who are living in the past, remembering what they see as 'the good old days' when lorries used to go through the centre of town, which is now pedestrianised.

"It's going to take time for them to get around the fact that the carnival, even though it's a walking one, is an actual carnival."

The parade begins at 1PM on Sunday 3rd July in Admirals Park, before travelling through Central Park and Bell Meadows Park, over Stonebridge Walk and up the Hight Street to finish in Backnang Square.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend, with Tony promising there will be lots for people to see: "We've got a samba band, a pipe band, we've got Chinese drumming and a jazz band. We've got lots of push floats being made, dance groups and about 30 community organisations.

"I've told them all to have as much colour and make as much noise as possible."

The event is part of the Chelmsford Festival, and more information can be found here.
