A race is taking place in Essex on Saturday to mark Remembrance Day and raise money for veterans.

The Remembrance Run, which takes place in a Saffron Walden army base, will raise money for military charity 'The Felix Fund'.

The Felix Fund aims to assist with the well-being of individuals within the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Search community.

It's being hosted by Active Training World (ATW) and will take place at The Carver Barracks, where the races will start from.

The day will consist of a marathon, half marathon, 10 km, 5 km and a 1-mile race. There will also be three duathlons.

The 1 mile starts at 8:30 am, whereas all other distances start at 9 am.

James Shipley is the Managing Director of Active Training World, and he says that several race distances are being held so that everybody can raise money for the charity.

He said: “We wanted to try and offer a day where everybody could get involved, so that everyone had the option to raise some money and do an event for a worthwhile charity.”

He continued, saying that entries are not quite back to pre-covid levels yet, but urges people to support this and other charities during the economic crisis.

He said: “Unfortunately, charities are really struggling for funds at the moment because of the pandemic and the economic crisis, so anything like this really helps them.

“Anybody that comes down and supports any way they can, even if it’s just a few pounds, really helps the charity.”

All races are traffic free and use the flat concrete grounds of the disused former World War II airfield.

The racecourse reminds the shape of an airplane

This ATW event has been running for 4 years, and James says the army of the Carver Barracks have been very welcoming.

He said: “They do not just wave a flag to say they support the charity; they really get involved with the event, often marshalling it. They even let us stay in the barracks the night before so that we are there nice and early!”
