Man charged over robbery of Olympian Mark Cavendish

Two men have already been sentenced relating to the incident in 2021

A man has been charged as part of Essex Police's investigation into the violent robbery at the home of Mark and Peta Cavendish.

Several men entered the Olympic cyclist's home in the early hours of the morning on Saturday 27 November in 2021.

The Olympian was seriously assaulted and violently threatened in front of his family in their home in the Ongar area of Essex.

The intruders left with two watches and a Louis Vuitton suitcase.

Yesterday (June 5) a 26-year-old man was arrested at Chelmsford police station and questioned on suspicion of robbery and GBH.

Jo Jobson, 26, of no fixed abode, has been charged with two counts of robbery, both relating to the incident in November 2021, and two counts of attempted GBH relating to a separate incident in July 2022.

He is due to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court today, 6 June.

In February, two men, Ali Sesay, 28 of Windsor Road, Croydon and Romario Henry, 31, of Bell Green, London SE26, were sentenced to a combined total of 35 years in prison for their parts in the robbery.

At that time, two other men, Jo Jobson and George Goddard were still outstanding.

Detective Chief Inspector Tony Atkin, who has led our investigation, said:

“These charges are a significant milestone in this case and further shows our commitment to securing justice for burglary and robbery victims across Essex.

“The team’s work will now begin in earnest, again, and we will seek, through colleagues in the Crown Prosecution Service, to present the strongest possible case in court.

“At this stage, George Goddard remains outstanding, and we are continuing our efforts to locate him and I would reiterate my message to him; you cannot stay hidden forever; those who may be helping you cannot help you forever. It is in your best interests to come forward.”
