Essex school gets in the festive spirit with themed Jubilee party: "It's about community"

Street parties are taking place across Essex this weekend to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Among those celebrating have been the children at Milton Hall Primary School in Westcliff.

The school hosted their Jubilee party last Friday, just before half term. Andy Douglas, the school's headteacher, explains why they wanted to celebrate: "For us, it's about community, as lots of people will say. "A lot of our children don't have outside space like our field and therefore they won't have the opportunity to have a street party, like the ones taking place up and down the country.

"It was important for us at Milton Hall that we had that street party for them."

For the event, each year group was allocated one of the seven decades of the Queen's reign and tasked with dressing up to match the style of the decade.

They also prepared a performance to a popular song from the decade which was debuted during the party.

The school provided a packed lunch and a keepsake memorial Jubilee teddy bear to every pupil, to help them remember the day for years to come.

Drama Teacher, Jonathan Buxton, who served as Master of Ceremonies for the festivities, said it was a special day for the kids: "I told the students they should feel very proud to live in the time of the longest reigning monarch, not just of the country, but the whole world... no one else can say that!

"It's very exciting for the school and the kids to be part of that experience."
