A police officer in Southend has been injured during an arrest after reports of shop theft.

Officers in Southend High Street were responding after a person reportedly left a shop without paying on Saturday afternoon, around 3:30pm.

A statement from Chief Inspector Jo Collins, Southend District Commander, says the officer "is receiving treatment and support" after the incident.

After detaining a man in handcuffs, a struggle followed with the officer suffering a serious injury to his ankle.

A 34-year-old man of no fixed address is in custody for questioning, arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.

Chief Inspector Collins said:

“My officers frequently place themselves in harm’s way to effectively protect the public and catch suspects.

“This officer is receiving treatment and support, but I would reinforce the message that no emergency service worker deserves to suffer injury while going about their duty.

“Any such incidents will be investigated to the fullest extent.”
