Plans to build a new war memorial in Basildon have moved a step forward.

Basildon Borough Council has now agreed to hold a consultation and come up with some potential designs for the new landmark to remember the fallen of the borough.

Proposals for a new memorial were originally agreed on in July 2019.

If it goes ahead it would be installed in the town centre in St Martin's Square, near the Bell Tower.

Local Councillor Terri Sargent said: "Each and every one of these individuals gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

"It will be a wonderful tribute to have a central place where all their names can be included as well as those from more recent conflicts. I look forward to seeing this project progress further."

There are currently 12 different war memorials across the borough.
