Southend United sale confirmed as agreement in place
Southend United football club has officially confirmed the successful negotiation of a deal for the sale of the club.
The consortium leading the acquisition is headed by businessman Justin Rees. The completion date for the takeover is set for November 1, 2023, at which point the consortium will formally assume control of the club.
The club's statement emphasizes the collaborative effort that went into finalizing the deal, giving credit to the support of creditors and acknowledging the assistance received from the Leader of Southend City Council.
"We can confirm that an agreement for the sale of the Club has been reached with a consortium led by Justin Rees. Everyone is working towards a completion date of 1 November 2023, that is when the consortium will formally take control of the Club," reads the official statement released by Southend United.
Expressing gratitude towards creditors and the City Council, the statement highlights the importance of cooperation from various stakeholders in reaching this pivotal agreement.
Acknowledging the stress and uncertainties associated with the sale, the club extends appreciation to its staff for their loyalty and thanks all stakeholders for their patience throughout the process.
"We recognise that this has been a stressful time for all associated with the Club. We would like to thank our staff for their incredible loyalty and also thank all our stakeholders for their patience," the statement concludes.
Greatest Hits Radio Essex have also called the club directly and had the news confirmed that a debt owed to HMRC over Unpaid tax has been paid in full.
So, the future of the club is secure - before a planned high court hearing tomorrow (Wednesday).
