Two 13-year-old boys, from Billericay, have been arrested on suspicion of arson, after an attack on a community hub in the area.

Police and the Fire Service were called to Chantry House last Thursday (April 4th) where a fire in a storage area at the rear had broken out.

The area, used to support community projects and groups, was left with substantial damage, with fire investigators ruling the circumstances as suspicious.

After an investigation was launched by Essex Police, CCTV images were circulated, and a PSCO on patrol in the area spotted suspects, leading to their arrest on Friday (April 5th).

Two 13-year-old boys were arrested on suspicion of arson, and have been bailed as investigations continue.

Inspector Steve Parry, of Basildon Community Policing Team, said:

“We know there has been significant and understandable concern since this fire, which has caused damage to a vital community resource used by many in the area.

“I would like to reassure the community in Billericay we are carrying out an in-depth investigation into the circumstances around this fire.

“Anyone with any information, or concerns, following this incident should of course reach out to us.”
