Edinburgh’s MoonWalk took back to the streets last night to raise money for breast cancer charity, Walk the Walk.

This year is the 17th time the event has run in Scotland, beginning in 2006.

People of all ages set off from Holyrood Park at 11pm last night to walk either a half or full marathon through the city, dressed in decorated bras or bra t-shirts.

Since the first walk, almost £22m have been raised to support people living with cancer.

Buildings and landmarks across the capital were lit up pink in honour of the walkers and volunteers who make it possible.

Edinburgh Castle, Camera Obscura, Victoria Quay, and St Andrew’s House were just some of the places along the way to show their support.

Walk the Walk recently awarded £50,000 to Cancer Support Scotland to help reduce the waiting list for Scottish cancer patients and their families, who are in desperate need of emotional and wellbeing support.

The walk is a chance for people who are living with, or in recovery from, cancer to meet and see the support available.

Barbara-Ann Mackay, her sister Sarah-Jane and aunt Audrey Anderson were all diagnosed with breast cancer during an eight-month period in 2018 and supported each other during treatment – they all had had double mastectomies and chemotherapy

The charity also promotes the benefits of walking as an important part of cancer prevention, as well as its improvement of mental and physical health.

Entries for next year’s walk are already open for Saturday 7th September 2024, and anyone interested can sign up on the website.
