Scottish boxer Willie Limond dies aged 45

Scottish boxer Willie Limond has died at the age of 45.

The former Commonwealth champion has passed away following a suspected seizure.

He was found unresponsive and rushed to Monklands Hospital in Airdrie where he was said to be in a critical condition last week.

A statement from St Andrew's Sporting Club on Monday confirmed his death.

It read: "Everyone at St Andrew’s Sporting Club are shocked and deeply saddened at the loss of our friend, Willie Limond.

"Willie was not only a legend of the sport, but an infectious character who will be greatly missed by us all.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Jake, Drew, Macy and the rest of the Limond family at this time."

Tributes have poured in for the popular fighter who held the EBU European Union super featherweight title in 2004 and the British super lightweight title in 2014.

Curtis Woodhouse, who Limond beat for the Commonwealth light-welterweight and British light-welterweight title, posted on X: "Absolutely devastated to hear the news of the passing of Willie Limond, a great fighter and a great man.

"We stayed in touch after our fight and always had a laugh together.

"Absolutely gutted. Rest In Peace champ."

Limond boasted an impressive record throughout his career - winning 42 of his 48 professional fights.
