People in Bearsden are telling us they're horrified at the number of accidents in the town involving pedestrians and cyclists.

Earlier they gathered to pay tribute to 56-year-old Una Brandreth who died last week after being struck by a lorry on Manse Road and to demand better traffic calming measures.

Organiser of the vigil Alastair McKenzie told Greatest Hits Radio: "More drivers are using the area as a shortcut to reach their destination quickly.

"Road works are also contributing to vehicles finding other ways to get to where they need to be which is contributing to more traffic travelling along smaller roads."

Almost 2,000 people have signed a petition demanding improvements are made for cyclists and pedestrians.

Angela Bellmooney, who set up the petition, said: “In the span of ten days there have been three serious traffic accidents in Bearsden involving pedestrians or cyclists being knocked down.

"On Boxing Day 2019, a family of six were mowed down on Manse Road with one person being killed. There will have no doubt been many more near misses.”

Alastair added: "I can vividly remember the day we had to quickly pull our daughter from the main road as were about to cross the road because the pedestrian lights were in our favour as a car sped past completely unaware of our presence.

"Even last week, two days after the tragedy, I witnessed a truck fully mounting the pavement in order to get round a vehicle which was waiting to turn right into a side road."
