Cheltenham's Everyman Theatre has announced that performances by a company formerly known as the 'Russian State Opera' have been cancelled.

The company, Amande Concerts, has no link to the Russian State or Russian Government, but theatre bosses say the planned performances are impossible.

Instead, the Everyman is asking people to donate to organisations supporting the people of Ukraine.

In a statement on social media, the theatre says: 'It is with great regret that we announce the performances of Madama Butterfly, Aida and Carmen presented by Amande Concerts will not take place as scheduled.

'Although Amande Concerts (which was previously marketed under the Russian State Opera name) is a U.K. based company of independent artists, with absolutely no financial, commercial or political ties to the Russian State or Russian Government, current events have made the continuation of their planned performances impossible.

'The Everyman Theatre has worked with Amande Concerts, which consists of performers from various nationalities throughout the world including a large number of performers based in Eastern Europe, specifically Ukraine, for many years. We have valued this artistic relationship and sharing of cultures. Our priority now lies with supporting the artists and wishing their performers safe travels as they attempt to return to their homes, many of which are in areas affected by the current situation in Ukraine.

'We collectively extend our support and best wishes to the people of Ukraine and hope that you will join us in supporting organisations such as the Unicef appeal for Ukraine.

'Current ticket holders will be contacted individually by the box office team to make alternate arrangements. If you have any questions regarding your tickets please email exchanges@everymantheatre.org.uk.'
