In the past 18 months the Gloucestershire Police say 40% of motorists tested have been over the drug driving limit. In response, the Gloucestershire Constabulary are warning against drink and drug driving.

In a week long campaign the police are attempting to debunk myths to show drivers how long drink and drugs can day.

By releasing dashcam footage showing the dangers of driving whilst under the influence of prescribed medication, they hope drivers will understand how much it can impair how you drive.

The released footage, shot by members of the public, shows a blue fan travelling between Cirencester and Gloucester. The van can be seen swerving across the road. The members of the public followed the van whilst notifying the police.

Once intercepted by the police, the male driver was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drugs. The driver was later found guilty and disqualified from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay £185 in fines and costs.

Inspector Rachel Lynch-Warden from the Roads Policing Unit said "We want to do everything we can to ensure the roads of Gloucestershire are as safe as possible.

"Motorists may not be aware of both the dangers and consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and we are hoping to raise awareness of this and catch those who ignore our advice.

Throughout the campaign, the Gloucestershire Constabulary will be carrying out stops on anyone committing traffic offences where they'll be asking the driver to provide a sample of breathe.
