It's claimed better education is needed to stop heavy drinking among young people in North Yorkshire.

Concerns have been raised by the Harrogate-based charity Humankind about a new report suggesting a possible link between social media use and frequent drinking.

They're calling for more awareness about the short term effects of alcohol consumption.

Sarah Blanchard, the charity's lead practitioner in North Yorkshire, said:

"It's important that young people know about things like alcohol units, the volume, the strength, as well as the hidden dangers that can often be in alcohol.

"We need to support young people to drink more responsibly, and to do that we need to provide better education and have those more meaningful and open conversations where we're going through things like the harm minimisation and the risk reduction that we provide.

"It's also about promoting awareness of what some of the longer term health implications can be of more harmful or dependence based drinking."
