Memorial unveiled for North Yorkshire police officer murdered on duty

A memorial has been unveiled for a North Yorkshire police officer shot dead on duty in 1982.

PC David Haigh died on 17 June 1982, aged 29. He was shot by a man he had stopped at Norwood Edge. He was found fatally wounded by colleagues who had become concerned when he didn't answer the radio.

PC Haigh's widow Annette Jukes was at the ceremony earlier at Norwood Edge earlier today and says it was very emotional: "I felt that it was very sad actually, because I'm thinking back to when it happened you know and I couldn't remember a lot, and I couldn't remember a lot but what I can remember, it get you."

She tells us she is relieved they finally have the memorial in place: "It's been marvellous to see all these people and it's such a lovely spot as well where we've chosen it's really nice and I hope we all feel a lot better now that we've got somewhere to come and remember him."

There are also plans for a memorial to be unveiled in Old Malton in memory of Sergeant David Winter.

Sgt Winter died on 28 June 1982, aged 31. He was shot during the search for the killer of PC Haigh and others.
