North Yorkshire's busiest road has been shut by police after two people were injured in a crash.

An appeal for information has been launched by North Yorkshire Police after two cars collided with each other late on Thursday night (January 18th).

At around 11:54pm on Thursday night, a blue Ford Focus and a silver Jaguar crashed into one another head-on on the A64, leaving both drivers seriously injured.

The incident took place on the stretch of road west of Malton, towards the bottom of Golden Hill near Huttons Ambo.

First responded arrived on the scene within minutes and treated both drivers for their injuries, whilst police launched an investigation into what happened.

The stretch of road was shut off for drivers in both directions whilst the force continues to carry out enquiries into how the incident took place.

One of the drivers involved in the crash - a man in his 30s - was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink driving, and is working with police as they carry out their investigation.

Diversions were put in place by officers for other motorists whilst the police continue with their enquiries, with the force urging drivers to seek alternative routes in the meantime.

Police re-opened the road on Saturday afternoon (January 20th), as they gathered vital evidence that could build on their findings thus far.

However, officers are still keen to speak to anyone who may have important evidence regarding the collision and are urging those with any information to get in touch.

The force are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have seen the collision happen in real time, or anyone who may have seen the cars in the lead-up to the crash itself.

Anyone who may be able to help officers in their investigations can get in touch with Joseph Schramm from North Yorkshire Police by sending him an email at Joseph.Schramm@northyorkshire.police.uk or quote incident reference number 12240011595.
