'Do not travel' warning on the railways between North West and Scotland
It's because of flooding
People are being warned not to travel on the railways between the North West and Scotland, with bad weather causing significant disruption.
Both Avanti and TransPennine Express have issued notices saying people can expect delays and cancellations because of flooding near Carlisle.
Commuters are being advised to defer their travel until another day, or claim a refund.
Darren Higgins, Commercial Director at TransPennine Express, said: “Due to flooding on the railway line north of Carlisle, train services are significantly disrupted.
“The safety of our customers and colleagues is our priority and we are urging customers not to travel between Manchester, Liverpool, Preston to Carlisle, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
“Anyone planning on travelling by train today (Thursday 23 May) can choose to defer their travel or claim a refund.”
It comes as the Met Office warns that heavy rain could cause fast flowing, deep floodwater which poses a danger to life.
An amber weather alert is in place across the majority of the region until midday and its expected that, in some places, a months worth of rain could fall within 24 hours.
