School leaders in Merseyside call for review into how students will be assessed in the future
It's after record numbers of students received top grades
As GCSE grades hit an all time high, school leaders in Merseyside are calling on the government to adopt a new approach in how students are assesed in the future.
Covid meant that students across the country were assessed on individual performance rather than having to revise for exams.
Almost one third of all students in the country picked up one of the top 3 grades,
Elaine Bowker is Principal at City of Liverpool College, she says it's time for a change :
"A review would be good. We do need to assess different skills. The exam room, the desks in rows isn't always going to assess the right things.
"There are some things we want to retain but I think we've learned a lot and thta's why students have done better.
"They've got more skills than I had when I wa stheir age and we need the methods now that assess all of their skills.
"The exam system hasn't changed since I sat my exams which was a long time ago but our students now have all these skills, digital and IT that we didn't have at that time".
