Robbie Williams has been named as the third recipient of the hugely prestigious BRITs Icon Award, following in the footsteps of Sir Elton John and David Bowie.

The announcement was made on Twitter just after 2pm.

Although Robbie has yet to post anything about it on social media, in a statement he said, “It’s a real honour for me to be given this award...The BRIT Awards are very special to me, and I’m humbled to be receiving the 18th of my career next month.”

The BRITs Icon Award is the highest award given by the BRIT Awards and only presented to those artists whose writing, recording and performances have set them apart as having made a lasting impact on British culture.

To celebrate this announcement Robbie will be performing an intimate gig in London's Troxy in November for a special TV show which will be aired in December.

The concert will include many of Robbie's hits and unique collaborations as well as highlights from his new album, 'The Heavy Entertainment Show' which will be released on the 4th November.
