The Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police has sacked an officer with immediate effect for posting a homophobic message on Facebook.

CC Ian Hopkins didn't reveal specific details of the post or the officer involved when he took to Twitter to condemn the Special Constable's actions.

He said there is "no place in policing" for the "totally unacceptable behaviour".

The dismissal follows a special case review yesterday and has been welcomed by the LGBT community, including the LGBT Foundation in Manchester.

The organisation's Community Safety Coordinator, Jessica White, said: “Manchester’s diversity and inclusivity is what makes this such a great city to live in, and we work closely with Greater Manchester Police to ensure that this remains this way. We welcome the Chief Constable’s swift and positive action in this case and for sending out a clear message that discrimination against LGBT and other communities is completely unacceptable.”

The GMP Pride Network also Tweeted their response saying it sends a positive message and shows that "hatred and intolerance is not acceptable" in Greater Manchester Police.
