Economy in the East hit hard by Covid-19

New figures from the Office for National Statistics show that the economy in the East was the second worst affected in the first few months of the pandemic.

The economy in our region shrank by 20.9% between April and June 2020.

That's more than every other region in the UK except the West Midlands which saw their economy shrink by 21%.

That compares to negative growth in GDP of 2.5% in the first quarter of last year in the East.

The smallest decline in the UK was in London in Q2 at negative 16.6%.

All regions showed negative growth in Quarter two of 2020, with England recording negative 19% growth overall.
