A man has been jailed for more than 10 years after knocking down and killing a 96 year old woman in Great Yarmouth earlier this year.

26 year old Michael Irons, of Lilac Close, admitted to manslaughter, criminal damage to endanger, driving with excess alcohol and causing death while uninsured at Norwich Crown Court.

Today he was sentenced to a total of 10 years 6 months behind bars, with an extended licence period of four years.

He has also been banned from driving for a decade.

Irons was involved in an altercation with another driver after a minor accident on Alexandra Road on March 8.

During the incident he deliberately scraped the side of a parked Audi, before reversing into another vehicle.

He returned to the scene minutes later after dropping off several passengers, driving towards the Audi intending to ram it.

While driving up Crown Road, Irons hit 96 year old Ivy Warnes, who was being helped across the road by her daughter. She died in hospital from her injuries.

Irons attempted to flee the scene Irons was apprehended by members of the public.

He was found to be over the drink drive limit upon his arrest.

DI Dave McCormack said: “Iron’s actions that day have left a family without a much loved mother and our thoughts remain with them."

"This was a case of appalling driving standards with Irons showing a complete disregard for other road users.

"Not only did he drive dangerously with a vehicle that was uninsured but he went on to use that vehicle as a weapon to enact a deliberate act of violence upon another road user - claiming the life of an elderly pedestrian in the process.”

Jill Warnes, daughter of Ivy, said: “Mrs Ivy Warnes, dear mum to John and Jill, passed away after being the victim of a horrific and senseless incident.

"The tragic circumstances of mum’s death will haunt us forever. We wish to ask for privacy during this very difficult time.”
