A magical new version of a Shakespeare classic is arriving in Newcastle next week - with South Tyneside singer songwriter Nadine Shah making her theatre debut.

Not Too Tame's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream starts at Northern Stage theatre on Tuesday - with a cast featuring several north east actors, all excited to be performing to a home audience.

And for the Whitburn born musician - she's over the moon to be taking on the role of Titania;

"I'm not a particularly nervous person in front of a crowd, but it's very, very different, in that this is an ensemble, and I'm really enjoying working as a team, I really love that.

"Music's always going to be my first love - but this is something I really wanted to take on - a challenge!

"I really wanted to test myself, I was very poorly last year and I wanted to take on something I hadn't done before,

"Which I think... I would wholeheartedly recommend for anybody!"

Davey Nellist, who plays Theseus, and also hails from the North East tells us its exciting to be involved in a production which doesn't just follow the same old patterns, especially with plays as famous as Shakespeare;

"You know - I've seen 50 Midsummer Night's Dream's over the last 30 years and there's no point in making it exactly the same as it's always been,

"So we play around with it - play around with some modern ideas."

Which is something Nadine also loves about the show, but is keen to explain - that doesn't mean the play loses it's tradition and magic;

"There's no dumbing down of Shakespeare here at all - although it can be chaotic and bombastic, and daft and silly - there's some real macabre moments in the play!

"I think that's mainly me!"
