Plymouth City Council are working with local retailers to ensure shoppers are kept safe this Christmas.

They are asking people to plan ahead and think about when would be best to set out and buy your festive gifts.

They are expecting the busiest times to be weekday lunchtimes and weekends.

Many shops will be staying open later every day, with late night shopping taking place every Thursday.

Some shops will also be opening earlier particularly in Drake Circus.

Plymouth Market will reopen fully and will be open every Sunday before Christmas from 10.30am to 4.30pm

There will still be the 1 hour free parking offer at Plymouth Guildhall, Plymouth Market and the Marks and Spencer car park throughout December - and for late night shopping on Thursdays, it will be £1 to park at Western Approach after 3pm.

Councillor Mark Lowry, Cabinet member for finance and city centre champion said:

"I’m beyond happy that these shops have been able to open and I would urge everyone to do their bit to help keep local jobs and businesses going by popping in and spending a few quid.

"But while I know people will be eager to start their Christmas shopping, it’s important we are not all part of a mad rush.

"The shops are doing all they can to keep you safe, we are doing our bit and I would urge shoppers to bear in mind COVID-19 is still with us.

"Try to avoid shopping at peak times if you possibly can - many of the shops will be opening a lot later, make an evening of it.

"Enjoy the lights but keep wearing face coverings inside and try to keep your distance."
