Pet owners in Rutland advised to take extra precautions this winter

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has issued advice on how to keep animals safe during the colder months

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has issued advice to owners of cats, dogs and other small animals ahead of winter.

The 2019 festive season saw over half of vets in the UK treat cats suffering from toxic ingestion after being poisoned by antifreeze.

There are instances where this can be fatal.

The BVA advises people to 'store and use antifreeze products carefully' and 'clean any spillages thoroughly'.

They also recommend that people contact their vet immediately should a cat develop any changes in behaviour or display symptoms such as vomiting, depression or seizures.

Coats are recommended for old dogs or those with thin fun, along with ensuring their paws are wiped in the event of snow or ice to remove traces of ice or grit.

The BVA say that older cats should be kept indoors during extremely cold weather and that healthy young cats should have easy access to shelter and warmth.

It isn't just cats and dogs at risk though.

Speaking to Greatest Hits, President of the BVA, Justine Shotton, said: "For some of our small furry pets like rabbits and guinea pigs, it's important to remember that they have specific needs and they might be quite sensitive.

Always make sure those animals have lots of extra bedding.

Maybe put things like a blanket or duvet on top of the hutch during very cold nights.

Check the water bottles or balls very regularly and make sure that there's that protection from things like snow.

She added:

"I would always recommend them going your local vets for advice or at least give them a call and have a chat or maybe another member of the veterinary team, especially nurses who are brilliant about talking through the risks.

If your pet has any health concerns that you want that expert opinion on, in terms of its individual care through winter, then do take your pet to a vet for a health check.

They'll be able to recommend you know particularly what should be done in that circumstance for that particular pet."
