Stamford and Rutland residents are sharing their thoughts after the Prime Minister survived a vote of no confidence last night (6th June).

Here's what some people in Oakham told us:

  • 'I don't know who could replace him, that is the problem. He's been great in some things but terrible in others.'
  • 'I feel like he's been under a bit of pressure lately, but he's had too many chances so he deserves to go.'
  • 'I think he deserves to stay, he's doing a good job. No one wants it, it's a poison chalice isn't it?'
  • 'We don't forgive him for the 'Partygate', a lot of people have died through Covid and that is unforgivable, but I don't think there's anyone better.'
  • 'What we've gone through and how things are, I think he's mastered most of it. He's alright. he's alright.'
  • 'He should've gone long ago or never been elected in the first place.'
  • 'I don't think there's anybody else, I don't think there's a Tory that can take hold and the Labour party's a shambles.'
  • 'Whether he deserves to lose his job, I don't know if that's the right thing to do or not, but equally what he did was wrong, so?'
  • 'People are moaning because he's had a bit of cake and a drink it's ridiculous, it's absolutely silly wanting him out. Conservatives will never get anywhere without him, let's put it that way.

David Tuck, Head of Politics at Stamford School, said there are several factors to consider that may help the PM survive the course: 'The Labour party. Keir Starmer has to convince voters that the Labour party has changed since the 2019 election and is fit again for Government.' 'They're only on 40 percent in the polls at the moment, whereas they should be on about 50 or 55 percent - given how much trouble the Government is facing.'

He also said that the Prime Minister is facing a very challenging future however: 'The odds are very much against Boris being able to survive for the next six months to a year. If we look at history and what happened to John Major and Theresa May - particularly Theresa May - many people feel that Boris Johnson may end up resigning, sooner rather than later.'
