Police in South Wiltshire have issued advice to homeowners to prevent distraction burglaries, following an incident in Downton.

Details of what happened yesterday (Wednesday 24th April) haven't been revealed by officers, but they're keen to stop further cases.

They've asked us to 'be vigilant' and make sure that anyone calling to offer gardening work, loft insulation or general house maintenance are from a legitimate company.

Officers also say the key advice is 'if in doubt, keep them out'.

There's a series of other tips which could help prevent more victims too:

  • Use your door viewer to see who’s there and if you open the door put the chain on first if available.
  • Always ask for ID and check it with the company before letting somebody into your home.
  • If there is a phone number of the company, check it in the phone book or online as the number on their identity card could be fake. Close the door while you do this before letting anyone in.
  • Genuine callers won’t mind checks. If you feel at all unsure, schedule a time for the caller to come back when a friend or relative is there.
  • For pre-planned appointments with companies, a password scheme can be set up - ask them to confirm the chosen password before engaging in any conversation.

We're asked to call 999 if a distraction burglary incidents underway, or dial 101 to report a past incident.
