A donkey foal's been killed in a hit-and-run collision in the New Forest, with police now investigating.

The animal was struck by a vehicle on the B30178 Roger Penny Way at around 5.00pm on Sunday (3rd December).

Hampshire Police say the conditions at the time were 'dark and wet', with the car involved leaving the scene, in the direction of Fordingbridge and Downton.

The donkey had to be put down by the agister, due to injuries it received.

A broken mirror and headlight glass were found at the scene, leading officers to think an older vehicle was involved.

Police are investigating as it's an offence to cause an injury to livestock in a road traffic collision, without reporting what happened.

There's now an appeal for witnesses to the incident, or who might have spotted a vehicle with similar damage, to contact officers.

You can contact them on 101, quoting reference number 44230494153 - or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Hampshire Police have also thanked members of public who stopped, called police and then remained to look after the foal at the scene.

The Roger Penny Way is a notorious stretch of road for animal accidents in the New Forest.

Local safety campaigners have also posted on social media about a recent increase in hit-and-run incidents.

If you're involved in a collision with livestock, you're asked to call police on 999 or 101 if it's not an emergency, or the Verderers office on 023 8028 2052.
