Fisherton Street Bridge in Salisbury is to get a boost with waterproofing works as part of a routine maintenance programme.

The existing footpath slabs and road surface are going to be removed, exposing the bridge deck.

The deck is then going to be prepared for a new spray applied waterproofing system.

The footpath slabs and road will then be restored.

The work will be carried out in two phases, with a north and south phase. The north phase started on Monday (8th April) and will complete on 5th June.

The south phase will take place from then until 17th July.

The final surfacing will be completed as part of the neighbouring Fisherton Gateway improvements.

Cllr Nick Holder, Wiltshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Street Scene and Flooding, said: “Our routine inspections show there is water seeping through the bridge deck, which if left unattended, could affect the ongoing future maintenance of the structure.

"As part of our preventative approach, we are carrying out the necessary work now to reduce more expensive and time-consuming repairs in the future. This is in line with our Business Plan which aims to ensure we have well-connected communities.

“Whilst this work does not form part of the £9 million investment in the city centre from the government’s Future High Streets Fund, it is sensible to carry out the works at the same time as the ongoing enhancements being carried out at Fisherton Gateway.

"The bridge works will coincide with the improvement works being carried out and traffic management arrangements in place at the western end of the Fisherton Gateway scheme to minimise disruption to local residents and businesses. We apologise for any inconvenience but can reassure everyone that businesses in the area are open as usual.”
