Essential work to repair the bridge on the A303 going over the River Avon east of Countess Roundabout in Amesbury, begins today (Monday 19th October).

It's being done to ensure journeys across are safe and reliable, but will cause some disruption in the area.

It's in desperate need of maintenance, including:

  • Concrete repairs
  • Replacing the bridge bearings and joints
  • New surfacing and lining

The work should be completed by March 2021.

The work is taking place on the A303 just east of Countess Roundabout

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

Here is how the road will be affected during the time the repairs are taking place:

Eastbound - Lane one will be closed 24/7 for the duration of the works back to the single carriageway section, but will be re-opened for the Christmas getaway period.

Westbound - Lane one will be closed overnight Monday to Friday from 8pm in the evening to 6am the following morning; 20 October to 27 November 2020.

Full overnight road closures will be in place between 8pm and 6am for one night during January 2021 and for seven nights in March 2021.

Signed diversion routes will be in place.

Highways England, who are carrying out the work, say that everything possible has been done to keep disruption to a minimum.
