Women from Salisbury joined hands today (Wednesday 8th March) in support of International Women’s Day’s “Link for Equity”.

Led by Salisbury Soroptimists, women of all ages formed a ring in the Guildhall Square to support women who have suffered abuse.

Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio, Liz Batten, a member of the Soroptimists said:

“We are supporting FearLess, a charity who work with women suffering domestic abuse.”

The event comes on the day that statistics revealed more than 270 people in Wiltshire were informed of a new partners violent history in the past 12 months.

Police have been using “Clare’s Law” to either inform new partners themselves or respond to enquiries from people in new relationships.

Ms Batten added that the Soroptimists hoped women would “think about the situation they are living in”, encouraging those who may be in abusive relationships to seek help to get out a “really bad” situation.

The women wore purple, a symbol against domestic abuse, or orange, to support the UN’s campaign to end violence against women.
